Qimonda sampling 512-Mbit MRAM

Germany-based memory technology supplier  today announced that it has started the sampling of its new 512-Mbit mobile-RAM (MRAM), the first in a family of products set to debut on the market by the end of the year.

MRAM products are ultra-low power DRAMs that Qimonda claims can reduce power consumption by up to 80 percent compared to equivalent density standard DRAMs. MRAMS are targeted to mainly serve mobile applications in smart and feature phones, portable GPS devices, digital cameras and MP3 players.

Qimonda said it uses a specifically designed 75-nm low-power trench technology platform that is the basis for an entire MRAM product family in this node. The new MRAM is available as DDR and SDR via bond option, the company said, and comes with two interfaces x16/x32 and a single/dual sided pad out to fit any component, multi chip package (MCP) or system in package (SIP.)

"We are very glad to introduce this multi-featured 75-nm low power Mobile-RAM, which is the lead product of an entire product family following in the next six months," Ayad Abul-Ella, VP of Qimonda's consumer and mobile business unit, said in a statement.

According to research from market analyst cited by Qimonda, demand for 512-Mbit equivalent MRAM is set to grow from 238 million units in 2007 to 1.2 billion units in 2010, at a compound annual growth rate of 71 percent.

Samples are available as component and as known good die wafers, Qimonda said
